Dawson’s mark of 28,507 passing yards with the Chiefs held up since 1975, but Mahomes is inevitable.
After his historic feat, Alex Smith—who played for the team between the 2013-17 seasons and ranks fourth in Chiefs history with 17,608 passing yards—congratulated the man who ultimately replaced him:

“I’ve only got one question for you: What took you so long?” Smith joked in the video. “In all seriousness, what you’ve done for this team, this city and everyone whose ever worn a Chiefs jersey is nothing short of incredible. You make us all proud, both on and off the field. From the very beginning, we all knew you were going to take this franchise to new heights, and that’s exactly what you’ve done.”
