After the Dallas Cowboys fell to 3-6 on the season via Sunday’s 34-6 home loss to the rival Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas star pass-rusher Micah Parsons saying he felt worse for veteran Cowboys players than for head coach Mike McCarthy, suggesting they “put in more time and work than Mike McCarthy ever did.”
During Monday’s edition of the ESPN “Get Up” program, former NFL player Damien Woody and former head coach Rex Ryan both offered strong responses to Parsons’ comments.
“I’ve never heard anyone say anything remotely like that after a game,” Woody explained, as shared by Nick Kosko of On3. “…There used to be a time when there’s a little bit of respect, a little decorum in the locker room. Because at the end of the day, it was about we . We didn’t do enough.”
McCarthy entered September in the final season of his contract. He’s since seen his team besieged by injury woes, including starting quarterback Dak Prescott suffering what’s been reported to be a campaign-ending partially torn hamstring. Whatever Parsons hoped to achieve with his words, outsiders may understandably assume at least some Dallas players won’t spend the second half of this season fighting to earn McCarthy a new deal.
“I just think it’s a bunch of BS, man. I really do,” Woody continued. “We can sit here and laugh and all that stuff…and be in shock. But that’s disrespectful with what Micah Parsons did to Mike McCarthy in that situation.”
As for Ryan, he grew up the son of coaching legend Buddy Ryan before Rex served as head coach of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. Thus, Rex Ryan knows plenty about the sacrifices coaches make even amid losing seasons.
“I don’t care how talented he is,” Rex Ryan said about Parsons. “That is absolutely BS. And if you would have worked half as freaking hard as a damn coach does, maybe you’d be able to play every damn game. Maybe your team wouldn’t just be a bunch of punks and lay it down every damn week like you’re doing. How about being a damn football team? You’re going to sell your damn coach out. It’s a crock of you know what.”
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell suggested that the Cowboys could make Parsons available during the offseason as Dallas attempts to build around Prescott after he signed a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $240M with $231M guaranteed in September. Meanwhile, stories have linked the Cowboys with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick since at least last winter.
One wonders how Belichick would truly feel about sharing a locker room with Parsons following the events of this past weekend.
